The Bush meat crisis is a term that has been coined to define the exponential and unsustainable consumption of Wildlife flesh. This is a phenomenon that characterizes the unsustainable utilization of wildlife/natural resources and indiscriminate destruction of wildlife habitats for the short term economic benefits from the commercialization and consumption of wildlife flesh and natural resources.
The un-sustainable exploitation of Natural resources under commercial logging, mining and construction industries have readily facilitated and enabled the activities of poachers to supply the local market with wildlife & products. The regional infrastructure developing with the industries have enabled the trade in wildlife and wildlife products locally, nationally, regionally and internationally. The supply cannot meet the demand leading to a crisis which is propagating species extinction.
The Crisis currently encompasses among others:-
- The local, national and international consumption of wildlife meat,
- The commercialization of Wildlife, trophies, souvenirs, hide, skins, furs, therapeutic remedies and portions,
- The commercialization of infants and orphans,
- Habitat loss and ecosystem degradation,
The cause of this crisis are the silent and active perpetrators whose activities facilitate the demand and the supply respectively. Silent perpetrators are the consumers while the active perpetrators are suppliers or activities that directly or indirectly facilitate the supply.
