The missing link plaguing all conservation initiatives is the absence of Wildlife Rights for endangered species. With out rights, endangered species remain a property of governments in countries where they are found at the disposal of the priorities of these states. Owing to the fact that most endangered species are found in third world countries plagued by corruption and civil strife and without the resources to effectively conserve and protect these species. The Northern White Rhino that up until recently was only found in Garamba National Park DRC, is now considered extinct. Governments can even decide to allocate habitats of endangered species for mineral exploration, logging or agriculture. A good example is Zimbabwe where habitats of endangered species like the Black Rhino have been allocated for ranching and farming by the locals. Another example is Lake Mburo National Park in Uganda where even after the extinction of the lion and the elephant from this area, the government decided to give away more than half of the Parks total area to the local communities for ranching purposes. The park area was reduced from over 600 square kilometers to less than 300 square kilometers. The government further decided to introduce the sport hunting on leopards among others in the area even though the carrying capacity of this endangered species remains questionable and the absence of concrete and reliable measures to monitor or ensure that the species isn't hunted to extinction. If endangered species had the rights to protection in their natural habitats, this wouldn't have been possible.
The formation of legally binding and enforceable international wildlife and habitat laws, is therefore crucial if species extinction is to be stopped. This is because the enforcement of current wildlife agreements, treaties, species extinction/ protection programs or accords, relies on the intentions and capabilities of states to either ratify and or implement these agreements. The implementation of even existing treaties is still plagued by corruption, civil strife, under funding with out the ability to either monitor let alone enforce or prosecute violation of these accords. If extinction is a global loss, the protection of endangered species shouldn't be based on good will to ratify or implement treaties, but should be a global priority and responsibility. Our mission is therefore to engage other conservation organizations, the united nations and the international law commission to ensure the formation of legally binding and enforceable international wildlife and habitat laws.
Stop species extinction and the indiscriminate destruction of Habitats by the local and international prosecution of the perpetrators. Taking into account that the Bush Meat issue wouldn't be a crisis if this remained localized to the local communities immediately surrounding the habitats, but is now a crisis because Bush meat is now accessible to communities thousands of kilometers further away, the availability of modern hunting equipment and especially the transportation of endangered species locally, regionally and internationally is facilitated and carried out by the machinery of regional and international industry. Trucks, trains, boats, ships and planes transporting products of companies operating in these habitats also transport wildlife and their products to towns and cities regionally and internationally leading to the Bush meat crisis, the pet trade and extinction of species. If the irresponsible activities of the Logging, mining, construction, transport, wildlife pet, souvenir and fur industries among others constitute gruesome atrocities and crimes against Wildlife, there is need for an international mandate for legal action and prosecution of these perpetrators. This is however impossible at this point due to corruption, political instability, the sheer financial might of these culprits, the bottle necks in legal procedure or jurisdiction and especially because there is no mandate internationally to address this. Our mission is therefore to ensure the possibility to prosecute these culprits not only locally where the crimes are committed but also internationally along their trade routes or in countries where in these companies are registered.
The formation of an official organ if the United Nations, similar to the ICC or the ICJ mandated to monitor & protect Wildlife. The International Criminal Court(ICC) has been mandated to prosecute international crimes against Humanity, genocide and or war crimes, while the International Court of Justice (ICJ) has been mandated to prosecute conflicts between nations. However there is currently no organ or mandate to prosecute crimes against wildlife. There is undisputable evidence implicating international and local companies in habitat destruction, in the Bush meat crisis, the pet, souvenir and fur trades and yet there is nothing that can be done to prosecute these crimes. With your support we would like to spear head the formation of such an Organ.
To liaise with wildlife conservation initiatives/concerns, governments, legal institutions and the international community to achieve a consensus establishing wildlife as a global heritage, monitored and protected by one central international body.
